Cider Rally in Candás

The summer brings to Asturias a coincidence of three factors: important management parties, good weather and cider. It is true that the second factor is random, and can occur (or not) in any station and the second is permanent and impervious to the weather or the station.

In the fishing village of Candás, two of the three factors coincide at the beginning of San Félix, the local festival that takes place between the end of July and the beginning of August and starts with the Cider Rally.

Candras Cider Rally does not have motor vehicles, although there is a trailer in disguise, nor are there stages, although there are stops, and there is no final classification, although there are those who arrive “damaged” to the Plaza de las Conserveras.

The Cider Rally is a celebration of friendship (and I don't mean the "exaltation of friendship" soaked in alcohol that we all know) because the mechanism to participate requires that it be done in a group.

The clubs have to register with the City Council, paying seven euros each of its members, and in return the organization provides them with a prenao bun and four bottles of cider per person.

The captain of each club wears a red shirt with the name and number assigned to it. The members of each rock usually wear a white T-shirt with the name of it and a typical Candasino sailor's scarf, with a familiar design throughout the North of Spain, of gray-blue squares with lines of different thicknesses.

It is mandatory that he or she go to each control point to pick up the cider although, obviously, it will be accompanied by a sufficient number of volunteers to help you carry it.

In the 2017 edition, 90 clubs were registered with 2,240 people from Candás, but also from Gijón, Avilés and other parts of Asturias.

The first bottle of cider was collected on Friday, July 28 at the "Fuente de Los Angeles" Recreation Area from 6:30 p.m. There you have approximately one hour to gather the rocks, scan, laugh and enjoy.

From there they move to the next stop, on Carlos Albo Kay Street, where they receive the second bottle next to a park and stay for about an hour repeating the procedure of the first stop.

In the third and last one, in the square of the Park Les Conserveres, the bets rise and two bottles are given to them. It is in that same square where a stage is installed and a DJ will entertain the crowd (and the video you will see what a crowd is) until the wee hours of the morning.

The Candras Cider Rally is the first major celebration of the Fiestas de San Félix and every year it brings together more and more people, participants or mere spectators of the spectacle of so much festive youth animated with charangas, music and, of course, cider.
